What Happened
On September 7, 2017, the credit reporting company Equifax reported a cybersecurity incident potentially affecting more than 140 million U.S. consumers. Based on the company’s investigation, the data breach occurred mid-May through July 2017. The breach exposed personal and sensitive information such as:

  • Names
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Birth dates
  • Addresses
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Credit card numbers
  • Certain dispute documents with personal identifying information

What You Need to Know
Your accounts are safe. Providence FCU is secure and we have not been breached. Providence FCU continuously monitors accounts and card purchases for suspicious activities. In the event we find something out of the ordinary, the credit union will take necessary actions, including blocking your card, to protect your Providence FCU account. You will not be held responsible for unauthorized charges made with your Providence FCU Visa debit or credit card.*

If Equifax contacts you and informs you that you are impacted by the breach, please contact us as soon as possible. We’ll take the steps to file a dispute or fraud report on your behalf.

What You Can Do
To further protect yourself from potential fraud and/or identity theft, we recommend you regularly review all of your banking accounts and credit reports for unusual activity. If you see anything out of the ordinary in your Providence FCU accounts, please contact us as soon as possible. We also recommend you add a code word to your account for additional security.
